News India Live, Digital Desk: Be it puja prasad or preparation of any South Indian dish, we often need coconut. After drinking coconut water, when we feel like eating its fresh and sweet kernel (gari), only one thought scares us – who will take it out from this stone-strong shell? Cracking a coconut and then separating the kernel from the peel seems no less than a task like breaking a mountain.
In this process, sometimes there is a fear of the knife cutting the hand and sometimes half the kernel remains stuck in the shell. But now you don’t have to endure this headache any longer. There are some easy and interesting hacks hidden in your own kitchen, with which the coconut kernel will come out whole like butter without any effort.
So let us know those 3 surefire methods.
1. ‘Desi’ way of roasting on gas
This is the most tried and effective method. This trick is used in most of the houses.
- What to do?: First of all, remove the jute-like fibers from the top of the coconut and wash it thoroughly. Now light the gas on low flame and place the coconut directly on the flame.
- How does it work?: With the help of tongs, keep rotating the coconut from all sides so that it gets even heat. Within 2-3 minutes you will see that the coconut shell has started cracking and a ‘crack’ sound will also be heard. This means that the shell has started leaving the kernel due to heat.
- Result: Now turn off the gas and let the coconut cool down a bit. After this, by hitting it lightly with a heavy object, the coconut shell will separate easily and you will get a whole, smooth kernel.
2. ‘Cool’ hack with the freezer
This method is a little different, but works wonders. In this you will have to do some planning in advance.
- What to do?: Simply place the coconut directly in your freezer and leave it there overnight (at least 10-12 hours).
- How does it work?: Due to extreme cold, the water inside the coconut freezes and the shell shrinks. Due to this, the grip between the kernel and the shell becomes loose.
- Result: In the morning, take out the coconut from the freezer and hit it on the floor or with some heavy object. You will see that the shell will break into many pieces very easily and the kernel will come out whole.
3. Modern method of oven or microwave
If you have an oven or microwave, this work can be even easier.
- What to do?: The most important thing is to make a hole in one of the three soft eyes of the coconut with a screwdriver or a knife and take out all the water. (This is very important for safety, otherwise the coconut may burst inside).
- How does it work?: Now place the coconut in a pre-heated oven at 180 degrees Celsius for 10 minutes or in the microwave for 2-3 minutes. The heat will automatically cause cracks in the shell.
- Result: Carefully take out the coconut from the oven, let it cool slightly and then tap lightly to separate the shell easily.
So next time whenever a coconut comes home, there is no need to sweat to break it. Just try any one of these methods and enjoy fresh coconut kernels to their fullest.
