News India Live, Digital Desk: Hindu Temple Traditions : We all have often seen the elders in the temple, after having darshan of God, coming out and sitting quietly on the stairs for some time. Many times we do this ourselves, but have you ever wondered why this is done? Is this just a way to relieve fatigue, or is there a deep spiritual secret hidden behind this little tradition?
Most of the people believe that after circling the temple and visiting the temple, it is necessary to sit for some time to get rid of the fatigue. This is true to some extent, but its real reason is much deeper and more beautiful, which is related to the biggest prayer of our life.
The whole essence is hidden in this one verse
In our Sanatan tradition, there is a scientific or spiritual reason behind every ritual. There is an ancient verse behind sitting on the steps of the temple and a deep belief associated with it. This verse is actually a humble prayer to God.
Verse:
Anayasena maranam, vina denayen jeevanam.
Before death, in the presence of God, in the body God.
Let us understand the deeper meaning of this prayer:
- Spontaneous death: It means, “O Lord, give me a death without any pain, may I die without any trouble.” That is, we ask God for the blessing of a peaceful and easy death, so that we do not have to suffer for a long time in bed.
- Vina Denyen Jeevanam: It means, “Give me such a life in which I do not depend on anyone, do not have to live helpless or destitute in front of anyone.” This prayer is for a healthy, self-respecting and self-reliant life, so that we do not become dependent on anyone else for our needs.
- Dehante tav sanidhyam: Its meaning is, “When my end comes, when I am leaving this body, may I get your company.” That is, we want the presence of God in the last moments of life, so that we can be free from illusion and concentrate only on God.
Parmesvaram in the body: “O God, grant me all this.”
Why do you sit on the stairs?
When we come out after seeing God, our mind is calm and full of positive energy. The sacred energy of the temple is with us. It is believed that this is the best time when we can sit peacefully, away from the hustle and bustle of the world, and offer the biggest and truest prayer of our life to God.
This pause for a few moments gives us an opportunity to dwell in the image of God in our mind and ask Him to make our life and death simple. It is not just a ritual but a sacred moment to remember the ultimate goal of your life and pray to God for it.
So next time whenever you go to the temple, after darshan, do sit on the stairs for a few moments. And don’t just sit, but repeat this beautiful prayer in your mind. This small task will give you immense peace of mind and deepen your understanding of life.
