News India Live, Digital Desk: It has happened many times in history that countries have bought land from each other, like America once bought Alaska from Russia. But coming in the year 2026 and insisting on ‘buying’ a part of a country sounds like the plot of a big movie. The dispute resurfaced when the US (particularly in the context of earlier discussions by the Trump administration) expressed interest in purchasing Greenland.
Why is Denmark angry?
Greenland is actually an autonomous territory of Denmark. Denmark says that Greenland is not a salable property which any big country can grab on the basis of money. The recent controversy increased when some things came to light that America can go to any extent to increase its influence there. Denmark even said that playing with sovereignty would be tantamount to ‘invasion’, whether through pressure or any other means.
After all, what is it like in Greenland?
The question arises that why is the world’s superpower so crazy about this area covered with snow all around? There are two big reasons for this:
- Hidden Treasure: Scientists believe that as Greenland’s ice is melting due to global warming, a huge deposit of ‘Rare Earth Minerals’ is coming to light beneath it. These are the things from which smartphones and electric car batteries are made. At present it is occupied by China, and America wants to strengthen its hold.
- Keep an eye on the enemies: If we look at the map, Greenland is a place from where America can keep a close eye on both Russia and China. It is a gold mine in terms of defence.
Headache for NATO
Both Denmark and America are part of the military organization NATO. If there is such a tussle between two friends, then any country like Russia can take advantage of it. Denmark’s warning is actually to remind the whole world that in the 21st century, you cannot buy a country’s identity just by writing a cheque.
