News India Live, Digital Desk: Political Leaders: In Uttar Pradesh politics, a round of rhetoric on religious issues and sharp reaction to it has started. Recently, a statement by Samajwadi Party prominent leader Swami Prasad Maurya has created a lot of ruckus, after which activists of Hindu organizations protested fiercely outside his government residence in Lucknow. The special thing about this protest was that the protesters sprayed Ganga water in front of their house for ‘purification’ and raised slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’.

The whole matter began when Swami Prasad Maurya made an objectionable remarks about Kanwari. He had said that if the police do their duty well, then ‘terrorists’ can also roam by wearing saffron and ‘terrorist activities’. His statement was considered to be a direct attack on the devotees of Lord Shiva, especially the Kanwari, who made hard journeys in the Shravan month and offered holy water to the Shiva temples. Various Hindu organizations, especially Bajrang Dal and other religious protector groups raised strong objections, saying that this comment was hurt by religious sentiments.

The protesters said that leaders like Swami Prasad Maurya are constantly insulting the Sanatan Dharma and the traditions associated with it. Kavad Yatra is a symbol of faith and devotion and in such a situation it is extremely condemnable to connect it with terrorism. The protesters wanted Swami Prasad Maurya to apologize for his remarks, and strict action should be taken against him. The activists also demanded their arrest, raising slogans of ‘Swami Prasad Maurya Murdabad’. He also held banners and posters like ‘Sanatan anti’ in his hands.

This is not the first time Swami Prasad Maurya is caught in controversies over his religious statements. Even before this, he has made controversial comments about Ramcharitmanas, Bageshwar Dham and Hindu festivals, due to which he and his party have faced strong criticism from religious organizations and parties like BJP. It is clear from this latest protest of Hindu organizations that in the coming times, religious and faith related issues will continue to be raised prominently in UP politics and leaders can come on more targets with such statements. This incident also forces to think on social harmony and political dignity.
