The cases of breast cancer in women are continuously increasing, but now the cases of this cancer are also seen increasing in men. Experts from the Cancer Department of AIIMS Bhopal have cited hormonal imbalance, obesity, unhealthy diet and smoking as the main reasons for the increase in breast cancer cases in men.

According to data collected by the Cancer Department of AIIMS Bhopal, where earlier there was only 1 male for every 100 breast cancer patients, now the ratio has reached 4 males. Although this information is not yet consistent with national level data, experts are cautioning against this increasing activity based on their clinical experience.

hormonal imbalance in men

According to experts, men have less breast tissue, making it difficult to detect tumors early and delaying diagnosis. According to Dr. Madhavanand Kar, Director of AIIMS Bhopal, modern lifestyle and wrong eating habits are increasing hormonal imbalance in men. Increased levels of estrogen hormone increases the chances of breast tumors, which can later turn into cancer.

The worrying thing is that this problem is now being seen not only in adult men but also in children. According to doctors, increasing obesity is also an important reason, because the level of estrogen is higher in obese bodies, which increases the risk of breast cancer.

Dr. Carr says that fast food and processed food affect hormonal balance the most. Nowadays many youth and children depend on fast food, in which various chemicals are added to enhance the taste. Sauces and toppings used in burgers, pizza, noodles and chow mein also disturb hormonal levels.

He further said that chemicals used in farming and fruit breeding, as well as steroids given to chickens for growth, also cause hormonal imbalance. This increases the risk of both gynecomastia (lumps or growths in the breast) and breast cancer in men.

Men should pay special attention to these symptoms:

  • a new lump or swelling near the breast or nipple
  • changes in the skin of the chest or loosening of the skin
  • nipple pain, color change, or discharge

swelling or lump in the armpit

Experts recommend that if these symptoms appear, immediate medical examination should be done, because early diagnosis can prove important in fighting breast cancer in men too.
