Diabetes medicine: The price of a normal diabetes drug called Empagliflozin has been significantly reduced. Now its price has remained tenth compared to before. This change came when many companies launched the generic versions of this drug in the market. Empagliflozin has been developed by German pharmaceutical company Bohriner Ingalehem (BI) and is sold under the Jordens brand. It is an oral drug that helps control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Earlier, medicine was available for so much money
Earlier, a pill of this medicine was available for about 60 rupees, but now it has been priced at only Rs 5.5 per pill. This deficiency was possible when companies like Mankind, Elkem and Glenmark launched its generic versions in the market. Mankind Pharma has said that its drug Empagliflosein will now be available at the rate of Rs 5.49 per tablet for 10 mg dose and Rs 9.90 per tablet for a dose of 25 mg. The company’s vice -president and managing director Rajiv Juneja said, “We are making sure that the cost of the drug should no longer be a hindrance to treatment.”

The alchem company has also launched this drug in the market under the name “Emponom” brand, which has been priced at about 80 percent less than the original medicine to protect against fake drugs. The company said that a special safety band has been installed on this drug packet to prevent fake medicines. Also, to make patients aware, information related to diabetes management in Hindi and English has also been provided in the pack. In addition, a QR code has also been provided, through which additional information related to diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease can be obtained in 11 languages.

How will patients get relief?
Mumbai -based Glenmark Pharmaceuticals have also launched the generic version of Empagliflozin under the name “Glampa”. In addition, its combined dietary drugs called “Glampa-L” (ampagliflozine + linagliptin) and “Glampa-M” (Empaglzin + Metformin) have also been launched in the market. Alok Malik, chairman of Glenmark Pharma, said, “This new drug of Glimfa series will provide an affordable and effective treatment option for patients suffering from Type-2 diabetes, which will also make better management of patients affected by heart disease.” India is called the capital of diabetes, where more than 10 million people were found to be suffering from the disease in 2023, according to a study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (Diabetes). In such a situation, reducing the cost of diabetes drugs can be an important step towards reducing the increasing burden of the disease.
