News India Live, Digital Desk: Trump’s Foreign Policy: When the enemy of the enemy becomes a friend, then one has to think whose mistake is. Something similar is being said about the foreign policy of Donald Trump in American media at this time. The manner in which India, China and Russia showed solidarity at the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, the US media is largely assuming the aggressive policies of President Trump.
What happened at the SCO conference?
SCO is an organization in which China and Russia are considered dominated and India is also an important member of it. This organization is often seen as a faction made against Western countries, especially the US. At the recent summit, the leaders of these countries talked about increasing mutual cooperation and facing unilateral American sanctions together. India also reiterated his resolve to fulfill its old friendship with Russia, despite the US pressure.
Why is the American media blaming Trump?
America’s big media institutions like ‘New York Times’ and ‘Washington Post’ believe that Trump’s policy of “America First” (America First) is actually becoming a policy of “America alone”. They argue:
- Attack on all together: Trump put heavy tariffs (import duty) not only on China, but also on friend countries like India. He also threatened India not to buy oil and weapons from Russia. This unilateral pressure forced these countries to come closer to each other.
- Dressing friends: The media says that Trump has forgotten to differentiate between his friends and enemies. India, which could have been a strong and trusted partner of America in Asia, dragged him into his business battle. With this, India has no more options than standing with Russia and China.
- China gets a chance: Trump’s policies have inadvertently given China a big opportunity. When America is targeting its own friends, China is pulling these countries towards itself and is presenting itself as a new world leader. This solidarity of SCO is a great example of this.
“Trump has given these countries a common enemy”
American experts believe that India, China and Russia have deep differences over many issues, but Trump’s stubborn attitude has given them all a common platform and a shared enemy, and that is- America. When America itself puts pressure on its friends, of course, they will find other options for their safety and interests.
In short, the American media believes that the solidarity that is seen in the SCO is not as much due to the mutual love of these countries as due to Trump’s foreign policy failures. Trump has inadvertently given a strong reason for his biggest rivals to come together.
