This is from 1785, when there was a terrible famine in Awadh. People were dying of hunger and there was an outcry all around. He started a unique “grain in lieu of work” campaign and started construction of this huge Imambara. It is said that during the day, ordinary laborers and poor people used to build buildings and at night the rich and family members used to drop the same wall a little, so that no one would lack work and this process continues for years. This was the period when this saying became famous in Lucknow- “Whoever does not give it, give it to Asafuddaula.”
