Pitru Paksha 2025: This year will be shared by double eclipse, know how to do Shraddha-tarpan

News India Live, Digital Desk: Pitru Paksha 2025: In Sanatan Dharma, the time of Pitra Paksha is considered very important for the peace of ancestors and respecting them. In these 15 days, people pay tribute to their ancestors, for them, do religious rituals like Shraddha, Pindadan and Tarpan. But the Pitra Paksha of 2025 is bringing a special and challenging coincidence. During this time there will be two eclipses-one solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse, which is worrying everyone in such a way how Pitra Karma will be done.

What is this rare coincidence?

Pitra Paksha 2025 will begin on 1 September with Purnima Shraddha and it will end on 29 September 2025 with the Sarvapitra Amavasya. Between these 15 days, two big eclipses will occur:

  1. First lunar eclipse: It will be held on 7 September 2025 (Sunday). This will be a subclavic lunar eclipse.

  2. Solar eclipse: It will be held on 21 September 2025 (Sunday).

  3. Second lunar eclipse: It will be held on 29 September 2025 (Monday). This will be a partial lunar eclipse.

What is a sutak period and why avoid it?

According to religious beliefs, the sutak period of eclipse is considered inauspicious. During this time no auspicious work is done. During the Sutak period, the doors of temples are closed, idols of deities are not touched, food is not made, nor eaten. During this period, travel and new works should also be avoided.

How to do Pitra Karma (Shraddha, Tarpan, Pindadan) in the midst of eclipse?

This is the biggest question that what to do if a shraddha or pindadan muhurta of your Pitra Paksha comes in the sutak period of these eclipses. There are clear instructions in religious texts for this:

  • No Pindadan and Tarpan in Sutak period: Remember, Pindadan, Tarpan or any special ancestral work is done for the ancestors during the Sutak period. These tasks are considered completely forbidden.

  • Option 1: Before the Sutak starts: If the date of your Shraddha comes before the Sutak period, you can do your ancestral deeds without any obstruction.

  • Option 2: After the end of the sutak: If the day of Shraddha is falling during the Sutak period, then you will have to wait till the sutak is over. After the end of the sutak and the eclipse ends, you can duly perform Shraddha and Tarpan for your ancestors.

  • Option 3: Mental chanting only: During the Sutak period you can chant the name of God or mental recitation of mantras related to the ancestors, but it is forbidden to touch or worship the idols. When the sutak and eclipse are finished, you can take a bath and do worship and shraddha again with full rituals.

Shraddha karma has immense importance in the ancestral side to provide liberation and peace to the ancestors, so even if there is an eclipse, Pitra Karma must be done by following the rules.
