Humanitarian Initiatives Between India-Pakistan: List of prisoners and fishermen in prisoners shared today
Humanitarian Initiatives Between India-Pakistan: List of prisoners and fishermen in prisoners shared today

Humanitarian Initiatives Between India-Pakistan: Despite the stressful relations between India and Pakistan, the two countries work together on some human issues. In this series, the two neighboring countries shared the list of Indian and Pakistani citizens in their respective jails today (July 1) with each other. These include civil prisoners and fishermen.

This ‘special’ swap is done every year

This exchange is under the ‘mutual agreement’ in 2008, which aims to provide the embassy access to each other’s prisoners and provide information about them. Under this agreement, every year on 1 January and 1 July, i.e. twice a year, the two countries give the list of these prisoners to each other.

How many prisoners are there in whose captivity?

According to the lists shared, according to:

  • In India’s custody: There are a total of 417 Pakistani citizens, including 343 general prisoners and 74 fishermen.

  • In Pakistan’s custody: There are a total of 371 Indian citizens, including 298 general prisoners and 73 Indian fishermen.

India made important demands

While handing over its list, India has also made several important requests from Pakistan. India wants all those Indian fishermen and civil prisoners to be released as soon as possible, whose nationality has been confirmed so far and who has completed their punishment. Especially India has requested for early release of 15 Indian citizen prisoners and 17 Indian fishermen. In addition, India has also demanded immediate counselor access to all the rest of the Indian citizens, which are still in Pakistan jails to confirm their nationality and get necessary help.

This process shows that despite stress on the border, information continues to exchange information for prisoners and their families on humanitarian basis. This is a small, but important step to improve the relationship between the two countries in the future.
