World number one Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek have booked their places in the semi-finals of the ATP and WTA Cincinnati Open after stunning comebacks.
Sinner avenged his loss to Andrey Rublev in Montreal last Saturday, beating the sixth-ranked player 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 after a tough battle. Similarly, Swiatek came back from a set down to overcome the challenge of teenage sensation Mira Andreeva to win 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Sinner will face 2021 champion Alexander Zverev, currently ranked third in the world, in the men's semi-finals of the Cincinnati Open. Zverev defeated Ben Scholten 3-6, 7-6 (7/3), 7-5 in the final set in a rain-interrupted match. Although the game was often tied in the third set, the German has confirmed his place in the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Open for the third consecutive time. After winning the tough match, the German player said that the court conditions and obstacles were difficult but the toughest part of the match was the restrictions. He has displayed strong tennis throughout the week. It was hard for me to find my comfort zone today but it still felt good to get the win.
