Ukraine’s tremendous attack before peace talks: Russia attacks with drones, difficulty of reconciliation

The Ukrainian security services recently attacked a courageous and large -scale drone called ‘Operation Spider Web’, targeting Russia’s military airbase. In this attack, thousands of kilometers from the front, Russian bases were also targeted, which President Woldimir Zelanski has described Ukraine’s longest distance operation so far.

It took one and a half years to prepare for this ‘magnificent’ operation. This included smuggling drones into the Russian sector.According to sources in the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU), drones were taken to Russia in a wooden structure on trucks. At the right time, the roofs of these structures were opened from a distance, and the drones flew towards their goals. A total of 117 drones were used, which attacked four (five) military bases in Russia (five as per Russian claim). These included airbases such as Olenya and Belaya, which are located in Arctic Russia and East Siberia, about 1,900 km from Ukraine and 4,300 km respectively.

Ukraine claimed that 41 Russian aircraft were affected in this coordinated attack, including TU-95 and TU-22 strategic bombers and A-50 radar detections and command aircraft. Ukraine claims that it damaged 34% of strategic bombers carrying Russian cruise missiles, causing an estimated $ 7 billion. However, Russia’s Ministry of Defense also confirmed the drone attacks and said that “several aircraft caught fire at the bases in Murmank and Irqutsk regions”. The ministry also claimed that the fire was controlled and no casualties were reported, as well as some suspects have been arrested. Russia has described the incident as an “terrorist attack”.

The attack took place just before the peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul, which could have a strategic effect on these talks. The operation was monitored by President Zelanski and SBU chief Wasil Maliyak individually. This is a large performance of its resources and perseverance by Ukraine.
