Understand, who selects the Vice President of the country? In such easy language that you will explain to anyone!

Post

We all often hear about the President, but do you know how the Vice-President of our country is selected? This is also a very important position because the Vice President is the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

This election is slightly different from the presidential election. Let me tell you in a very simple language today, who vote in this election and how the whole process works.

Who casts votes?
A special group casts votes to choose the Vice President, called the ‘Electoral Board’ or Electoral College. This group consists of only members of Parliament:

  • All Lok Sabha MPs:It also includes MPs whom the public selects directly and nominated members.
  • All Rajya Sabha MPs:In this too, both selected and nominated by the President vote.

Overall, all 788 members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha together elect the Vice President. One important thing is that the MLAs (MLAs) of the states do not vote in it, as in the presidential election.

What is the election process?
This election is not like ‘my candidate won’ directly. It contains voting in a special way which is called ‘proportional representation system’.

  • No vote, preference has to be given: Voting MPs do not choose one candidate, but rank candidates according to their choice. Like- the first choice, this is the second choice, and so on.
  • secret ballot:This entire process is through secret ballot, meaning who voted, it is not known.
  • Half quota needs to win:To win, the candidate has to get more than half of the total votes. If the winners are not given by the votes of the first choice, then the lowest vote candidate is excluded and his votes are distributed among the rest of the candidates on the basis of second choice. This process goes on until one gets the quota of victory.

Who can become the Vice President?
There are some conditions to contest elections for this post:

  • He should be a citizen of India.
  • He is over 35 years old.
  • He has the ability to be elected MP of Rajya Sabha.
  • It should not be in the post of any profit.

In addition, the candidate has to get support of at least 20 MPs as proposals and 20 MPs as SECONDERS.

In short, only the Vice President of the country choose the MPs elected by us. This is an important constitutional process that reflects the depth of our democracy.
