In the year 2026, the Hindu New Year (Vikram Samvat 2083) is going to start from March 19. This year’s Samvatsar is going to be very special, because according to astronomical calculations, this year will have 13 months instead of 12. This additional month is called ‘Adhik Maas’ or ‘Purushottam Maas’, which is considered best for spirituality and charity.
Vikram Samvat 2083: King Jupiter and Minister Mangal will take command
According to the Hindu calendar, the Samvatsara named ‘Raudra’ is starting from Chaitra Shukla Pratipada. According to astrologers, the king of this new Samvat will be the ruling planet Jupiter, while Mars will hold the charge of the ministerial post. With this coordination between the king and the minister, one can see strictness in the administrative system and increase in religious activities.
Unique combination of 13 months: Jyeshtha month will be ‘double’
The Hindu calendar is based on the phases of the moon. An extra month is added every third year to bridge the gap of 11 days between the lunar year (354 days) and the solar year (365 days).
When will there be more months: Jyeshtha month will come twice in the year 2026.
date: The period of Adhik Maas will be from 17 May to 15 June 2026.
Bearing: Due to this extra month, Diwali, Dussehra and other big festivals will be delayed by about 15 to 20 days from the normal time.
The series of festivals will start from Chaitra Navratri
The Hindu New Year is welcomed in different forms across India:
North India: Worship of Maa Durga with Chaitra Navratri and Ghatasthapana.
Maharashtra: It is celebrated with great pomp and show as ‘Gudi Padwa’.
South India: In Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh it is known as ‘Ugadi’.

Religious significance of Adhik Maas (Purushottam Maas)
According to religious beliefs, the lord of Adhik Maas is Lord Vishnu (Purushottam) himself. In this month, auspicious works like marriage, mundan or house warming are prohibited, but chanting of mantras, pilgrimage, listening to Shrimad Bhagwat Katha and donating provide eternal results. It is believed that the sadhana done in this month brings special blessings of Lord Vishnu.
