There was a violent clash between two student groups during the ‘Visarjan Shobha Yatra’ held on the occasion of Vijayadashami after the conclusion of the nine -day Navratri ceremony at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Friday.

According to Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) Joint Secretary Vaibhav Meena, the Sangh organized a symbolic ‘Ravana Dahan’ in Sabarmati, which aims to refute “Naxal -like forces”. Meena claimed that during this event, Afzal Guru, Omar Khalid, Shajil Imam, G. Putas and photographs of people with alleged Naxalite ideologies like Sai Baba and Charu Majumdar were burnt.

He said, “On the day of Vijayadashami today, JNUSU had called upon us to burn Naxalite forces, Naxalites Ravana. The nine -day Durga Puja of Navratri is also celebrated in JNU. The idol immersion is also done on the day of Vijayadashami. Therefore, a Shobha Yatra is also being taken out. ‘Ravana Dahan’ was done with pictures of people with Naxalite ideology like Sai Baba, Charu Majumdar. “

Meena further alleged that when the procession of ‘Shobha Yatra’ was going on throughout the campus, members associated with leftist groups – who had gathered at Sabarmati Tea Point to protest their own effigy burning – interrupted the procession by throwing shoes at the participants.

He further said, “When the Shobha Yatra was being taken out in the campus, the leftist party was present at the Sabarmati tea point as they had organized the effigy combustion there. They wanted to create disruption in the Shobha Yatra. They changed their place and then changed their place and then came to the Sabarmati tea. Will go to the police. “

Reacting to the incident, JNUSU president Nitish Kumar said the clash was erupted due to a controversial poster aired earlier during the day, in which ‘Ravana Dahan’ was announced, in which JNU alumni Omar Khalid and Shazil Imam, who are known for their activism, were depicted as Ravana.

He said, “A poster started walking in our group at around 9-10 am today, stating that they are going to do ‘Ravan Dahan’. Omar Khalid and Shajil Imam, who were students of this campus and who had launched a movement to protect the citizenship of this country, were portrayed as Ravana. He was opposed to JNUSU, protesting it, while protesting it, we did not do it. The effigies of the constitution and human rights were not burning effigies.

He also claimed that during the Durga immersion procession, the opposing group stopped its DJ music for half an hour and raised slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and praised the ‘bulldozer justice’ of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

He added, “Meanwhile, Durga immersion was taking place from him. He shut down his DJ for half an hour and shouted slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and Yogi ji’s bulldo justice. Then he started waving slippers. We made a human chain to stop the violence. But he tried to incite violence there for half an hour. Later, he went away.”

The situation in the campus remains tense and there is a possibility of filing an official complaint by both sides.
