Vote in Uttarakhand and development in Uttar Pradesh? Tehri Garhwal MP Mala Rajya Lakshmi Shah’s Agra love in discussion

But sometimes such news comes which forces everyone to think. The latest case is related to Tehri Garhwal Lok Sabha seat of Uttarakhand. Here MP Mala Rajya Lakshmi Shah is in discussion (and controversy) these days regarding the expenditure of her ‘MP Fund’.

The matter is that the MP has recommended spending a huge amount of about Rs 1 crore from her MP fund, not in Tehri or Uttarakhand, but in Agra city of Uttar Pradesh. As soon as this information became public, a new debate broke out in the local corridors of Tehri and on social media.

The question is why do we show kindness to strangers instead of our own?
Although, technically speaking, there is a provision in the rules of MP Fund that an MP can give a certain part of his entire fund (about Rs 25 lakh or more in some circumstances) outside his constituency, but spending a huge amount of Rs 1 crore in another district, and that too in another state, is rarely seen. It is being told that this money has been proposed for some special work in Agra.

What do the people of Tehri have to say?
People living in the hilly and remote areas of Tehri Garhwal often face poor roads, lack of health facilities and challenges in education. In such a situation, it is reasonable to raise a question in their minds that “If our MP had a budget, then why was it not used in solving our villages or our problems?” In a big city like Agra, where a lot of development funds are already available, people are not able to understand this help of Rs 1 crore.

What is the political angle?
Opposition leaders have now started capitalizing on this issue. This is being directly described as ‘an insult to the people of Tehri’. However, till now there has been no major official clarification from the MP as to why Agra was chosen and which work there was given so much priority.

Ultimately, this case has given rise to a new debate of politics and morality. People always remember who supported them in difficult times and whose money was spent where. Now it remains to be seen what color this story of Agra love brings to the politics of Tehri in the future.
