The Government of India has launched a new scheme called Passport Seva 2.0 to bring transparency in the process of issuing passports and make the process easier for people. Under this new system, e-passports will be available across the country. Earlier this service was available only in cities of some states. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar announced this on the occasion of 13th Passport Seva Day on June 24. Additionally, the police verification process has also been simplified through the mPassport Police App.
What is e-passport?
E-passport is a combination of paper and electronic passport. It has a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and an antenna fitted in the passport. It also has a security chip. This chip digitally stores the passport holder’s photograph, fingerprints and other details. E-passports can be identified by an additional gold colored symbol printed at the bottom of the front cover of the passport. Its data is secure, no one can copy this e-passport.
Why is e-passport required?
E-passport is important from national security point of view. Now it will become impossible to make fake passports. This will foil the intentions of those involved in anti-India missions who travel on fake Indian passports. Due to digital signature and encryption, tampering with data will now become impossible. Biometric data will allow accurate identity verification. The visa process will also become easier, as your data or information will already be verified with the e-passport.
How secure is e-passport?
E-passport data is stored in a secure, centralized database managed by the National Informatics Centre, Government of India. Biometric data and personal details of the passport holder are stored in the electronic chip of the e-passport in the NIC. For data security, it is secured by public key infrastructure (PKI) encryption.
Is it necessary for everyone to get an e-passport?
The government has said that all paper passports issued so far will remain valid till their validity date. In cities where e-passport facility is available, you will get an e-passport on application.
