What message did Xi Jinping bring to West by bringing Kim and Putin together in Beijing?:

Post

News India Live, Digital Desk: International Relations: Recently, the world saw a picture which has created a stir in international politics. In Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un together appeared on one platform. This was not a common meeting. It was part of a well thought out strategy, through which a very clear and tough message has been given to the West, especially America.

So why did Xi Jinping bring these two leaders together?

To understand this, we have to see the ongoing tension with the US and Western countries of these three countries. These three countries are facing American restrictions and pressure in some form or the other.

  1. China: China’s trade war with America and conflict over technology is not hidden from anyone. America and China are face to face on the issue of Taiwan.
  2. Russia: Russia has imposed strict economic sanctions on Russia since attacking Ukraine.
  3. North Korea: North Korea has been facing international sanctions for decades due to its nuclear program.

In such a situation, Xi Jinping has called these two leaders together in Beijing and showed that the countries that America and West consider their enemies are no longer alone. They stand with each other. This is an attempt to create a “axis” or “group” against America.

What does this meeting mean to the west?

This meeting was not just a chance to get a photograph, but it has deep diplomatic meanings:

  • Demonstration of solidarity: The most direct message of this is – “The pressure you put on us, the closer we will come.” This is a direct answer to the policy of ‘divide and rule’ of the West. This shows that instead of isolating these countries American restrictions, they are making them dependent on each other.
  • Rules-based world system challenge: America and Western countries always talk about “rules-based international system”. Through this meeting, China, Russia and North Korea are saying that the rules of the world will not decide only the western countries. They want a multipolar world where America does not dominate just.
  • Economic and military cooperation: This meeting is also a sign of growing economic and military cooperation among these countries in future. Both Russia and North Korea need their economy and the army with China. At the same time, China gets such companions in the form of these two who openly oppose American policies.

Is this a new ‘cold war’?

Experts believe that this picture reminds of the Cold War, when the world was divided into two groups. However, today’s situation is slightly different, but it is clear that a new kind of factionalism has started in the world. On one side there are America and its allies (such as NATO and G7), on the other side there are countries like China, Russia, Iran and North Korea which are challenging this system.

This meeting is a warning to the US and its associates that their pressure policy is having the opposite effect and it is pushing the world towards a new and perhaps more dangerous conflict.
