When Ved Vyas ji needed a writer

Maharishi Ved Vyas ji had created the entire story of Mahabharata in his mind. But there was a big challenge before him – who will write this huge knowledge? Vyas ji used to speak very fast and his verses were also very deeply mean. He wanted a writer who could keep pace with his pace and write everything.

He went to Brahma ji with his dilemma. Brahma Ji suggested him that Lord Ganesha can be the best person for this work.

Ganesh ji laid a unique condition

Ved Vyas ji reached Ganesh ji and prayed to him to write Mahabharata. Ganesh ji agreed, but he placed a condition. He said, “If I start writing, my pen should not stop even for a moment. If the pen stops then I will stop writing there.”

Vyas ji knew that Ganesha’s intellect and writing speed is very fast. Therefore, he also put a condition of his own. He said, “Okay, but you will not write it without understanding the meaning of every verse.” Ganesh ji agreed to this.]

And then the day of Akshaya Tritiya was chosen

Now the question was when to start writing such a big and holy book. For this, there was no better day than Akshaya Tritiya. “Akshay” means which never decay, that is, which never ends. It is believed that any work started on this day flourishes for eternity and its virtue never decreases.

That is why Ved Vyas ji and Ganesh ji chose this auspicious day so that the effect of Mahabharata’s creation and its knowledge will always remain.

When Ganesh ji broke his tooth

As soon as Ganesha started writing, Ved Vyas ji started speaking. Whenever Vyas ji had to take some rest or think of time, he would say a very difficult verse. Ganesha would take some time to understand its meaning and in the meantime Vyas ji would get a holiday.

It is said that Ganesha’s pen broke while writing. But they could not stop according to the condition. So he immediately broke one of his teeth and continued to write it by immersing it in ink. He is also called “Ekadant” because of his sacrifice and dedication.

In this way, on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya, this great work was completed without stopping and we found a book in the form of Mahabharata which still shows us the way.
