News India Live, Digital Desk: How vicious cyber thugs have become can be gauged from the fact that now they are making not only common people but also big leaders and MPs of the country their victims. The latest case has come to light from West Bengal, where senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Lok Sabha MP Kalyan Banerjee became a victim of online fraud. The thugs stole lakhs of rupees from his bank account.

After this incident, Kalyan Banerjee is not only upset but also very angry. He expressed deep concern that if this can happen to him despite being an MP and a senior lawyer, then what will happen to the safety of the common man of the country?

How did you trap the MP?

This fraud was done using the same familiar method that fraudsters are using the most these days – Electricity bill.

  1. It started with a fake SMS: Kalyan Banerjee received an SMS from an unknown number, in which it was written that his previous electricity bill had not been updated.
  2. Threatened to cut electricity: A threat was also given in the SMS that if he did not update the bill immediately, the electricity to his house would be cut off at 10 pm.
  3. Asked to download an app: When contacted on the number provided in the SMS, the fraudster on the phone asked them to download a mobile app so that they could “update” their bill.
  4. Game over as soon as you download the app: As soon as the MP installed that fake app on his phone, the thugs got complete control of his phone. After this, within a few moments he withdrew lakhs of rupees from Kalyan Banerjee’s bank account and emptied it.

What did the angry MP say?

After this fraud, Kalyan Banerjee immediately lodged a complaint with the police and cyber crime branch of CID. Venting his anger, he said, “This is a very serious matter. I am an MP, a senior lawyer. If these people can cheat me, then imagine what would happen to a common rickshaw puller or a common citizen. These people will be completely ruined.”

He further said, “This is a big threat to the country. The government should think seriously on this. I will also raise this matter in Parliament.”

This incident is a big warning for all of us. Think a thousand times before clicking on any unknown link or downloading any app on someone’s advice. Because one small mistake can ruin your lifetime earnings.
