While buying fruits, you must have often seen small stickers on which special codes are written. These little stickers aren’t just for branding or decoration. These stickers have a special code called PLU code.

This code can help you identify the quality of the fruit. Eating high quality fruits is associated with good health. So let us know what the code written on fruits means.

The PLU code is usually 4 or 5 digits long, and the first digit determines how the fruit was grown. By reading this code you can find out whether the fruit is organic or non-organic.

If the sticker on the fruit has a five-digit number starting with ‘9’, it means the fruit is completely organic. No chemical pesticide or chemical fertilizer has been used in it.

If there are only 4 digits on the sticker, it means the fruit has been treated with pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Such fruits are often cheaper, but less healthy due to being cooked with pesticides.

Take these precautions while buying fruits: Once you know about this code written on the fruit, keep this in mind while buying the fruit. Whenever possible, buy organic fruits with five digits starting with ‘9’.

Whether the fruit is organic or processed, it is very important to wash it thoroughly before eating it so that the bacteria present on it are removed. Also, try to buy seasonal fruits as they are fresher. (All photos courtesy: Social media and Google)
