News India Live, Digital Desk: The war of Mahabharata was not only of weapons but also of words and curses. Ghatotkacha, son of Bhima and Hidimba, created an uproar in the Kaurava army with his bravery while fighting on behalf of the Pandavas in the war. But do you know that this brave warrior was given a curse by his ‘elder mother’ Draupadi herself, which became the reason for his death?

When Ghatotkach reached in-laws’ house for the first time

According to the legend, when Ghatotkacha, the son of Bhima and Hidimba, reached his father’s house i.e. the palace of the Pandavas for the first time, he first greeted his father Bhima and then the other Pandavas as per the orders of his mother Hidimba. But, he delayed or unknowingly ignored Draupadi who was present there.

The fire of Draupadi’s insult and anger

Draupadi, who was already hurt by the fact that Bhima had married a demoness (Hidimba), became extremely angry at this behavior of Ghatotkacha. They felt that a ‘demon son’ had insulted an ‘Aryan queen’ in a public gathering.

Draupadi, overcome with anger, said to Ghatotkacha: “O fool! You have neglected me as taught by your demonic mother. You have forgotten that I am Lakshmi and the eldest bride of this clan. Go, I curse you that your life will be very short and you will be martyred without any reason in some big war.”

effect of curse on war

This curse of Draupadi proved true in the war of Kurukshetra. When Karna had the ‘Amogha Astra’ (power given by Indra) to kill Arjun, Lord Krishna introduced Ghatotkacha on the battlefield. Ghatotkacha created such a ruckus that Duryodhana got scared and he forced Karna to use his infallible weapon on Ghatotkacha.

Shri Krishna’s Leela and Ghatotkacha’s sacrifice

It is said that if Draupadi had not been cursed, perhaps the situation would have been different. But Lord Krishna knew that Ghatotkacha’s sacrifice was necessary to save Arjuna. After the death of Ghatotkacha, Shri Krishna smiled because he knew that now Arjun was safe and Karna was no longer left with that divine weapon.

Key Points:

Result of insult: Draupadi’s curse was the result of ego and violation of decorum.

Hidimba’s sorrow: Due to this curse, Hidimba also had some harsh words for Draupadi’s sons, which is indicated in the latter part of the Mahabharata.

Strategic Importance: Ghatotkacha’s death paved the way for the victory of the Pandavas.
