One of the greatest epics of human history, Mahabharata, called the fifth Veda, is not just the story of Kurukshetra war. It is an infinite ocean of knowledge that explains the ultimate meaning of religion, karma, philosophy, politics, human relationship and life. This amazing book with more than one million verses, which is full of eternal truths guiding generations, is given by Maharishi Ved Vyas. However, he is only planner of this great yajna.
The credit for giving written form to Mahabharata goes to Lord Ganesha first. As Vyas ji says, it is necessary for everyone to know the reasons behind this unique event written by Ganapati. There are some interesting facts about Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayak Chaturthi, which is being celebrated on September 27, 2025 this year.
Mahabharata, a supernatural achievement
In stories, anecdotes, characters’ feelings and philosophical discussions are so complicated that it is impossible for an ordinary man to maintain them in his memory and write them in a consistent way. The story of Mahabharata used to take shape in the mind of Vyas Maharishi like a stream. Without any obstruction, a person with a supernatural power, extraordinary intelligence and unlimited patience was required to script that river of knowledge, without spoiling its meaning, rhythm and essence. The only deity who could overcome the obstacles in such an extraordinary work was the destroyer Ganesh. Vyas felt that Ganesh with divine intellect, was the right choice to complete the huge task without any obstruction, which was beyond the reach of human intelligence.
Ideal writer
: Ganesha is the ruler of intellect and knowledge in the family of the gods. They are capable of understanding any subject immediately and analyzing its internal meaning. Many philosophical layers, moral dilemmas and esoteric meanings are hidden in the verses of Mahabharata. The person should not only be able to listen and write them, but should also understand the deep meaning hidden behind them. Vyas knew that Ganapati is the only person who can understand every word, his religion and subtlety said by Vyas. That is why he entrusted him with this huge responsibility. It was not only physical exertion, but a complete intellectual and spiritual partnership.
terms:
Ganesh agreed to the great work of writing Mahabharata, but he laid a condition. That is, Vyas would have to pronounce shlokas in one tone without stopping. Vinayak placed a condition in front of Maharishi Vyas that if Vyas stayed even for a moment, he will stop writing and never write again. Vyas, while accepting this challenge, laid a condition in return … Ganesh, you will write each verse told by me only when you understand it completely. Vyas laid this condition. This condition had two benefits.
One … Bharata was not only written quickly, but the great talent like Ganapati also proved its essence. Second, when Vyas ji recited some complex verses, Ganesh ji took a short time to understand him, Vyas ji got a precious opportunity to remember the next verse. This eccentricity, this consent between the two, completely balanced the speed and depth of writing.
Broken tooth
Ganesha’s pen broke while writing Mahabharata. Vyas ji did not break his vow, and according to Ganpati’s condition, he should not have stopped. Without thinking for a moment, Ganesh ji broke one of his teeth and continued to use it as a pen. This proves that for attaining knowledge and any great goal, a person can abandon his comforts and even physical beauty. From that day, Ganesh ji became a person with each other. That broken tooth remains a permanent symbol of his dedication, perseverance and immense reverence for knowledge.
