News India Live, Digital Desk: Alcohol Consumption Trends : There was a time when alcohol and parties were considered a big part of growing up and socializing. But today’s young generation, which we call Gen-Z (i.e. people born between 1997 and 2012), is changing this entire perception. A new global report has exposed this changing trend, and its figures are quite surprising. According to this report, 36 percent of Gen-Z youth around the world have never drank alcohol till date.
This figure is much higher than previous generations and shows that there is a major decline in alcohol consumption among youth. So what is it that today’s young generation is turning away from alcohol?
What are the big reasons behind this distance from alcohol?
- Increased Health Consciousness: Today’s generation is very conscious about their physical and mental health. They easily get information from the internet about how harmful alcohol is for health. They prefer to avoid things like alcohol for better sleep, better skin and a healthy body.
- Prioritizing Mental Health: Jen-Z talks openly about mental health issues. They understand that alcohol may reduce stress for a short period of time, but in the long run it can increase anxiety and depression. Therefore, instead of relying on alcohol for mental solace, they are adopting other healthy methods.
- Financial Prudence: Wine is an expensive hobby. Today’s youth consider it wiser to travel, have new experiences or save their hard-earned money instead of spending it on alcohol.
- Changing Social Norms: Hanging out with friends no longer means just sitting in a pub or bar and drinking. Gen-Z prefers meeting at coffee shops, gaming, going hiking or watching a movie at home with each other. For them, the standards of looking ‘cool’ have changed. ‘Not drinking’ no longer seems strange to anyone, rather it is being seen as a sensible option.
- Impact of the Digital World: Gen-Z spends most of her time online. They are afraid of going to parties and getting drunk and then being embarrassed by it. They understand very well that one wrong photo or video can spoil their online reputation forever.
This change is not just a statistic, but a sign of a larger social and cultural shift. Today’s young generation is proving that life can be enjoyed to the fullest even without alcohol and being healthy is more important.
