News India Live, Digital Desk: In Hinduism, the period of 13 days after death is considered very sensitive. Garuda Purana According to this, when a member of the family passes away, it is considered prohibited to light a stove in that house. Often people consider it to be just an old tradition, but there are deep religious and psychological reasons behind it. Let us know why the kitchen of the house is kept cold after death.

1. Attachment of the departed soul towards home According to Garuda Purana, even after death the soul remains among its family for about 13 days. She is sad to see her family members in mourning. It is believed that if food is cooked in the house and its aroma spreads, then the worldly attachments of the soul increase further, which creates obstacles in its further journey (the next world).

2. Way to express condolence Not burning the stove in the house is a medium of expressing deep grief. It is not considered appropriate to cook food in a house where there is mourning. That is why relatives or neighbors bring simple food from outside on that day. This tradition also shows the solidarity of the society that in the hour of grief the entire community stands with the victim’s family.

3. Strict rules of Garun Purana According to the scriptures, until the deceased is cremated, the house is considered ‘impure’ (sutak). Even after cremation, the stove is not lit to maintain a sattvik atmosphere in the house. Garun Purana says that lighting a stove during these days can cause pain to the soul of the deceased and it does not get peace.

4. Scientific and Psychological Approach Psychologically, the members of the house where death has occurred are in deep shock and mental stress. In such a situation, it is not possible to concentrate on household tasks like cooking. This rule provides time for the family to bid final farewell to their loved one and mourn.

What to eat during Sutak period? During Sutak, very simple food is usually eaten without garlic and onion. In many places there is a rule of eating food only once. Until ‘purification’ (such as the tenth or thirteenth) takes place, preparation of festive food or dishes at home is prohibited.
