As the festive season approaches, both expectations and rumors start spreading rapidly. Just ahead of Durga Puja, a news is spreading like wildfire among many people in West Bengal – that this time ration card holders will get ₹1000 cash along with free ration. Hearing this, many people are happily reaching their nearest ration shop.
But is this news true? Is the government really giving money as a gift for Puja? And if yes, who will get this money and how? Let us remove this confusion today and know how much truth is there in this.
What is the free ration scheme of West Bengal?
First of all, know that the scheme of giving free ration in West Bengal is absolutely true and it continues till October 2025. Under this scheme, lakhs of poor families get food security. Depending on the card you have, you get rice and wheat every month:
- Antyodaya Anna Yojana Card: On this, every family gets 35 kg of grains.
- Priority and Special Priority Cards: Every person gets 5 kg of grains on these.
- State Food Security Scheme-1: On this, every person gets 5 kg rice.
- State Food Security Scheme-2: 2 kg grains are available on this.
This scheme is running without any interruption, but no new announcement of giving ₹1000 along with ration has been made anywhere in the government documents.
Then where did the news of ₹1000 come from?
Now coming to the biggest question. If no such announcement was made in West Bengal, then how did this news spread?
Actually, this news is true, but Not for West Bengal. This confusion arose because many online news portals and social media posts published the news but did not tell which state this scheme belonged to.
- Odisha Government In July, it had announced to give ₹1000 to the cardholders of its Antyodaya Anna Yojana.
- after this Chhattisgarh Government had also announced to give ₹1000 every month to its approximately 15,000 BPL families.
Some media portals of West Bengal published these news without complete information, due to which people thought that they were getting this gift for puja.
So the simple and clear thing is that…
Ration card holders in West Bengal are getting free ration, but ₹ 1000 cash is not being given along with it.
Yes, it is true that the West Bengal government provides financial assistance to women, farmers and elderly under many other schemes, such as:
- Lakshmi Bhandar Yojana: In which women get allowance every month.
- Krishak Bandhu Scheme, Widow Allowance and Old Age Allowance: These are some other schemes under which money is sent directly to the bank account, but they are not directly related to the ration card.
So next time you go to the ration shop, do take your free ration, but ignore the news of ₹ 1000 as a rumour.
