India’s Grandmaster Koneru Humpy won the World Rapid Chess Championship title for the second time by defeating Indonesia’s Irin Sukandar on Sunday. Humpy had earlier won the competition in Georgia in 2019. India’s number one female chess player Hampi became the second player after Chinese chess player Xu Wenjun to win the title more than once.
She is the first player from India to do so. The last round was a must win. Hampi finished the tournament with a score of 8.5 out of 11. It was a decisive victory for the Indian Grandmaster. He needed just one win to win the championship. A draw or defeat will shatter his dream. However, this did not happen. In the men’s category, 18-year-old Volodar Murzin of Russia won the title. Murgin is the second youngest FIDE World Rapid Champion, after Nodyrbek Abdusatorov. Nodirbek won this title at the age of 17. With this victory, Hampi made a great end to Indian chess. His achievement was special. Recently, D.Gukesh of India won the title in the Classical Chess World Championship in Singapore by defeating Ding Liren of China. Hampi has performed well in rapid chess. He won a bronze medal in Moscow in 2012. He also won the title in 2019. In 2023, he won the silver medal at this tournament in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. In 2023, she missed the title in a tiebreak against Russia’s Anastasia Bodnaruk.
