India's Defence Sector Exports: India's defense sector exports have increased more than 30 times in the last 10 years. The Russia-Ukraine conflict and the Israel-Hamas war have prompted many countries to increase their arsenals. This has increased India's exports. India's growing defense industry now supplies to more than 90 countries globally. The government is also easily giving licenses to private companies. Apart from this, they are also promoting the export of their weapons globally. Meanwhile, the question arises that which country is buying the most weapons from India. But the name that has come out now has shocked everyone.

India's hard work paid off

According to the report, America is at the top among the countries buying the most weapons from India. America is called the world's superpower. Apart from this, it is also focusing on supplying defense equipment and weapons to Africa and other countries. For this, India is also easily giving loans to poor countries. India is also using diplomatic power to promote its country's exports.

Export figures are constantly increasing

Defence Ministry data shows that exports have grown by a massive 78 per cent in the first quarter of 2024-2025. Defence exports rose to Rs 6,915 crore in April-June from Rs 3,885 crore in the year-ago period. In 2023-2024, it reached a record Rs 21,083 crore (about $2.63 billion), up 32.5 per cent from Rs 15,920 crore in the previous fiscal.

America became the biggest buyer

The largest importer of Indian defence goods is the US, accounting for nearly 50 per cent of India’s total defence exports. This is primarily because US companies now buy systems, subsystems and parts worth over a billion dollars annually from India as part of their global supply chain network and their offset commitments. “We envision India emerging as a global manufacturing hub not just for complete defence systems but also becoming part of the global supply network for major companies,” said a defence sector source. “Whether it is the Americans or the French, they are now buying a lot from India, which shows how much the local industry has progressed.”

What is India selling?

According to the report, India's Defence Ministry did not provide further details about the exports or specific countries. However, the report cited multiple sources in the government, industry and diplomatic circles as saying that India's defence exports are extensive. Exports by government and private sector companies include ammunition, small arms (sniper rifles and special sighting systems), bulletproof jackets and helmets, electronic goods, armoured vehicles, light torpedoes, simulators, drones and fast attack ships.

Which country is buying what?

Myanmar has traditionally been a major destination for Indian defence exports. In recent years countries like Israel and Armenia have also emerged as significant buyers of Indian weapons. Israel imports drones and their parts except some sighting systems, weapons made in its joint ventures in India as well as some fuses and ammunition. While India has signed the BrahMos missile deal with the Philippines and signed a deal to export air defence systems to Armenia apart from artillery guns.
