News India Live, Digital Desk: Eyes are the mirror of the heart…” We all have heard this saying. But do you know that your eyes can tell the condition of not only the heart but also the condition of one of the most important organs of your body, i.e. the kidney? Yes, it may sound strange, but it is true.
Kidney is the ‘silent worker’ of our body, which silently works to clean the blood and remove dirt from the body. When any kidney problem begins, its initial symptoms are often so minor that we do not pay attention to them. But our eyes start giving some such signals which, if recognized on time, can prevent a major problem.
If you see these 3 changes in your eyes, then be careful
1. Swelling under the eyes or ‘puffy eyes’ after waking up in the morning
Do you wake up in the morning and find that there is swelling around your eyes, especially under the eyelids? Most people ignore it as a result of lack of sleep or fatigue. But this can be a very serious and early sign of kidney failure.
Why does this happen?
When our kidneys do not function properly, they fail to remove excess water and salt from the body. This water starts accumulating in the body, and its first effect is seen on the delicate skin around the eyes, which becomes swollen. This is called ‘periorbital edema’.
2. Constant dry and itchy eyes
If your eyes remain dry all the time without any reason, there is burning and itching in them, then this can also be a warning. When kidneys start failing, the balance of minerals like calcium and phosphorus in the blood gets disturbed. Due to increase in the amount of phosphorus in the blood, itching starts in the body, which also affects the eyes and they become red and irritated.
3. Blurred vision
If you suddenly feel that your eyesight is becoming weak or your vision is blurred, then do not make the mistake of considering it as just an eye problem. Kidney disease often causes high blood pressure. This increased blood pressure can damage the small blood vessels present in the retina of the eyes. This is called ‘hypertensive retinopathy’ and if left untreated, it can cause permanent vision damage.
What to do?
It is not necessary that these symptoms are always due to kidney disease, there can be other reasons for them. But if you experience any of these symptoms continuously, especially if you also have problems like extreme fatigue, change in urination or loss of appetite, then consult a doctor without any delay. A little awareness on your part can save the life of this silent hero of your body.
