Good news for mom and dad:Parents often complain that “The child is getting good marks, but he is not able to do any worldly or household work.” If you also think the same, then CBSE has heard you. A historic change is going to take place in the Indian education system.
Now your children will not just pass the exam by rote learning, but in school they will be taught how to use a screwdriver, take care of plants and understand gadgets. Board for class 6th to 8th Skill Education Has been made mandatory. This will no longer be an “extra subject” but will be a part of the main studies.
What is ‘Skill Awareness’? (New preparation of NCERT)
Under the new National Education Policy (NEP 2020), NCERT has prepared a new series of books, named ‘Skill Awareness’ (Skill Board).
- Motive: To remove children from the world of books and introduce them to reality.
- shift: Till now craft or sports were kept aside, but now there will be two consecutive periods every week only for learning skills. The school time-table is about to change.
Will children finally learn? (Curriculum)
These changes will be visible not just on paper but on the ground. Children will be taught three types of ‘real work’:
- Association with living beings: This includes planting trees, taking care of animals and the basics of farming.
- Machines and Materials: Small mechanical repairs at home, use of tools and how things are made will be taught.
- Human Services: Helping others, First Aid and social responsibility.
Project’s ‘quota’:
In the next 3 years (including classes 6, 7 and 8), each student will receive a total of 9 projects Will have to be completed. For this, there will be about 270 hours of practical classes in schools. Meaning now the bag will be light and the skill will be heavy.
Gone are the days of paper and pen exams!
The most interesting thing is that its result will not be decided by sitting in the “examination hall”.
- Written Test: Only 10% score. (Yes, you read it right!)
- How will we get the remaining 90%?
- 30% for activity book.
- 30% for Viva or Presentation.
- 20% for teacher observation (how much the child is learning in the class).
- 10% for portfolio (file).
‘Skill fair’ will be held in the school
To make studies a celebration, a program is organized in schools at the end of the year. ‘Skill Fair’ Will be imposed. Here children will display their made projects, models and experiences in front of their parents. Imagine how proud your child will be when he explains to you how he fixed a machine or grew a plant.
CBSE clearly says that now becoming skilled is not an ‘option’ but a ‘necessity’.
