Videos play intermittently, a file takes hours to download, sound cuts out frequently on video calls… slow Wi-Fi is probably one of the most frustrating problems at home. We often blame it on the internet company or the router, but the real culprit is often hidden inside our house.
Yes, some things of our daily use are the biggest enemies of Wi-Fi signal. They stop, weaken or interfere with the signals and reduce your internet speed. Let us know who are those 5 villains present in your house.
1. Microwave oven (worst enemy?)
You will be surprised to know, but whenever you run your microwave, it can slow down the speed of your Wi-Fi. This happens because both your microwave and Wi-Fi router work on almost the same frequency (2.4 GHz). Consider it as if two vehicles try to move together on the same narrow road, which causes a traffic jam.
- Plough: Its solution is very easy. Keep your router as far away from the microwave as possible. Or if your router has 5 GHz option, then switch to it.
2. Gadgets with Bluetooth (Small Devices, Big Trouble)
Your Bluetooth headphones, speakers, keyboard and game controllers can also create problems for Wi-Fi. All of them also run on the same 2.4 GHz road. One or two devices do not make much difference, but when too many Bluetooth devices work together, there is a traffic jam for the Wi-Fi signal and the net becomes slow.
3. Fridge, cupboard and metal furniture (wall for signal)
Metal is the biggest enemy of Wi-Fi signal. This stops the signal from traveling further and reflects it. Big metal objects present in your house like fridge, oven, steel cupboard or geyser act as a wall for Wi-Fi, creating ‘dead zones’ (where the signal does not come) in the house.
- Plough: Therefore, the router should always be kept in an open and high place, so that the signal gets full space to spread.
4. Fish aquarium (water absorbs the signal)
It may sound a bit strange, but water absorbs Wi-Fi signals. If you have a big aquarium in your house, it can weaken your network. Especially if there is salt water in the aquarium, it blocks the signal even more. Apart from this, the filters and pumps installed in the aquarium also interfere with the signal.
5. Mirror (bouncer of signal)
The thin metal layer behind the glass reflects the Wi-Fi signal like a bouncer. Due to this, the signals get weakened due to collision with each other and dead zones are formed in the corners of the house. If a big mirror is placed near the router, it can reduce your Wi-Fi speed by almost half.
- Plough: Therefore, always keep your router away from large mirrors so that you can get a strong and stable connection.
