Flydubai Mid-Air Attack: Omani Co-Pilot Hamam Alhamami Identified in Attempt to Crash Tel Aviv Flight and Attack Captain Smit Machchhar

The co-pilot who allegedly attempted to bring down flydubai flight FZ1073 en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv and violently attacked the aircraft’s Indian captain, Smit Machchhar, has been officially identified as Hamam Alhamami (also reported as Hamam Al-Hammami). The mid-air incident put over 170 passengers and crew members at severe risk when the aircraft entered a steep, uncontrolled plunge over Saudi airspace before Captain Machchhar, despite suffering multiple severe injuries, unlocked the cockpit door to enable crew members and passengers to intervene and overpower the attacker.

Mid-Air Sabotage and Captain Smit’s Heroic Stand

The incident took place aboard a scheduled Boeing 737 service carrying over 170 passengers, including 24 children, mostly Israeli nationals. While cruising at roughly 34,000 feet, the aircraft suddenly entered an alarming dive, dropping over 16,000 feet within seconds at a descent rate reaching nearly 23,000 feet per minute. Inside the cockpit, the co-pilot used the onboard crash axe and sharp objects to inflict deep wounds on Captain Machchhar’s limbs, chest, and abdomen.

Recognizing that losing consciousness would doom everyone aboard, the injured Indian captain fought off the assault and reached the emergency cockpit lock mechanism. Cabin crew and three alert passengers breached the flight deck, subduing the attacker and pinning him to the floor. A relief flydubai pilot travelling aboard took command of the controls, stabilizing the aircraft and executing an emergency landing at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Airport in Tabuk, northwestern Saudi Arabia.

Background and History of Extremist Indicators

Emerging investigative reports reveal a history of red flags regarding Alhamami’s extremist ideology. Born in the UAE to an Omani father and a Syrian mother, Alhamami previously worked at Oman’s national airline. However, Omani civil aviation authorities removed him from commercial flight duty and relegated him to an administrative ground role after colleagues flagged his radical religious views and behavior.

Sources indicate that Alhamami subsequently relocated outside Oman, spending time in Syria before securing employment with flydubai approximately eight months ago. Former colleagues noted unusual behavioral patterns, including aggressive ideological rhetoric, excessive workplace rigidity, and refusal to interact professionally with female personnel. Searches conducted through his personal belongings uncovered anti-Israel propaganda and radical Islamist literature, prompting intelligence officials to treat the sabotage as a planned terror plot.

Multi-Agency Investigation and Security Vetting Under Scrutiny

Following the emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi authorities detained Alhamami before transferring him into UAE custody, where he faces a formal terrorism investigation led by the UAE Attorney-General. Senior Emirati officials have officially classified the cockpit attack as a “dangerous terrorist act,” while Israeli intelligence agencies—including Shin Bet and Mossad—have launched comprehensive inquiries into how an individual barred by another Gulf state’s national carrier managed to clear airline security vetting to operate sensitive routes into Tel Aviv.

Meanwhile, Captain Smit Machchhar was airlifted to a medical facility in Abu Dhabi, where he is recovering from multiple stab wounds. Leaders including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have praised Captain Machchhar’s extraordinary composure and courage, crediting his split-second decision-making with preventing what could have been one of the deadliest aviation catastrophes in modern history.
