Maharashtra Floods: Death Toll Rises To 150, CM To Undertake Aerial Survey Of Affected Regions

Mumbai: About 150 people have so far died in several incidents related to floods, landslides, and rains in Maharashtra. While 100 people are reported missing, more than 50 people have been injured in rain-related incidents. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is expected to conduct an aerial survey of Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur on Monday.

After the visit, Thackeray is expected to hold a meeting with officials in Satara and address the press. Earlier on Sunday, Thackeray visited flood-hit Chiplun in Ratnagiri district of the Konkan region. The locals stopped the Chief Minister’s convoy and shared their concerns caused by the rains in the area.

The road leading to Sangli city is also flooded. Boats are now being operated on the roads on which trains used to run. However, getting a boat is also difficult so people have to walk through waist-deep water.

After heavy rains in Sangli, a large part of the city is flooded up to 10 feet. One storey houses have been submerged. The NDRF team is engaged in helping thousands of people stranded in the water. In fact, after heavy rains, the water level of the river Krishna, which is called the lifeline of Sangli, rose to flood the villages and towns.

Army-NDRF engaged in relief and rescue work

The army is conducting rescue operations in the flood-affected areas of Sangli. NDRF is engaged in relief and rescue work in Walarea. Hundreds of people have been evacuated so far, but a lot of people are still waiting for help.

Crocodile threat now after floods

The threat of crocodiles is looming large in the areas adjacent to thewa river Krishna in Sangli. Even in 2019, Sangli city was flooded, but taking lessons from it, the administration is yet to take any measures to save people from such a threat.

CM not to celebrate birthday

Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray will not be celebrating on his birthday and urged party workers and citizens to not engage in public functions on his birthday. A statement released by the Chief Minister’s Office said, “Nature has unleashed its fury over Konkan and western Maharashtra. Many people have died due to floods, many families have been affected. Maharashtra is mourning this calamity. Although July 27 is the birthday of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, he has decided not to celebrate it due to these calamities.”

The Chief Minister also asked that no one should meet in person to wish him on his birthday and no one should put up billboards, posters. Instead, he will accept wishes through social media and email.
