The National Medical Commission (NMC) has started the process of drastically increasing MBBS and Post Graduate (PG) seats for the academic session 2026-27. According to the latest update, in government medical colleges of different states of the country 220 new MBBS seats And 211 new PG seats The proposal to add is in the final stages. With this decision, not only will the competition become a little easier for the students preparing for NEET, but there will also be improvement in health services.

Where and how many seats will increase? These states will get the most benefit

This proposal to increase seats is mainly for those states where the infrastructure of medical colleges has improved.

MBBS (220 seats): There are preparations to add these seats in some identified medical colleges of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar.

PG (211 seats): In view of the shortage in the field of specialization, this increase in MD and MS seats is being done. NMC team had recently inspected many colleges, after which these seats are being approved on the basis of faculty and lab facilities.

‘Golden chance’ for students preparing for NEET UG 2026

The direct benefit of this increase in medical seats will be given to those students who are going to appear in the NEET UG 2026 examination. Experts believe that with the increase in the number of seats, there may be a slight decline in the cut-off of government colleges, which will increase the chances of talented students with lower ranks also getting a government seat. The increase in PG seats will provide relief to those doctors who want to complete their specialization in AIIMS or other big institutes.

When will the new seat matrix be implemented?

According to NMC officials, this process will be completed by June 2026 so that these new seats can be included in the upcoming counseling session. Colleges have been directed to update their faculty and hostel facilities as soon as possible in proportion to the increased seats.
