Speaking to Indian Express, District Panchayat President Harshita Singh said: “The proposal was moved verbally in a session on Saturday when most of the members were present. This proposal was brought by BJP leader and former district chief of the party, Block Pramukh Laxmi Narayan. The House passed the resolution as no one showed any opposition. Not a single person in the House opposed it. By next week we will write a letter to the district magistrate informing them about the proposal. Then they will take further action and write to the government. Ultimately the government will take the final decision on the name change.”

When asked about the reason for changing the name of Firozabad, Singh said: “We are not changing the name. We are just going back to the old name, which was Chandra Nagar before the Mughals came to India. Firoz Shah, who was the representative of Emperor Akbar, named this place Firozabad. Before the 1560s, the place was named after Raja Chandra Sen, who ruled before the Mughals.”

At the same time, BJP leader and former district chief of the party, Block Pramukh Laxmi Narayan Yadav said that “the entire district wanted the name change. I read this resolution as the first order in the new session. It was passed unanimously verbally.”
