Tokyo Olympics: India Makes History As Kamalpreet Kaur Enters Finals In Discus Throw

Tokyo: Discus Thrower Kamalpreet Kaur engraved her name in the history books as she barged into finals at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday while her compatriot Seema Punia stood at the sixth spot after being fouled. The qualifying rounds for women’s discus throw were held today at the Tokyo Olympics. Seema Punia and Kamalpreet Kaur represented India. Throwing a discus over 64 meters in the qualifying round can directly qualify for the finals. Otherwise, the top 12 finishers will qualify for the finals.

India’s Kamalpreet Kaur participated in the Group B qualifying round. The Indian Discus Thrower hurled 60.29 meters in her first chance. Kamalpreet, who then excelled in the second chance, threw the discus 63.97 meters far. In his third chance, he threw a distance of 64.00 meters and qualified directly for the final. The final is set to take place on August 2 at 5.30 pm.

On the flip side, Seema Punia was the first to participate in Group A. She fouled on his first chance. In the second chance, she threw the discus a distance of 60.57 meters. She then hurled 58.93 meters in the third inning. Thus he took 6th place in that group category.

Earlier in the day, India’s Avinash Chappell took part in the 3000m steeplechase on the first day of the athletics meet. He finished the race clocking 8.18.12. As well as setting a new national record. He broke his previous national record of 8.20.20 and set a new record. Besides, India’s MP Jabir took part in the 400m Hurdles, where he finished 7th clocking 50.77. MP Jabir is out of the first round by finishing last in his heats round. He missed the chance to go to the semifinals.
