Tokyo Olympics: Indian Fencer Bhavani Devi Meets Novak Djokovic During Practice At Tokyo 2020

Tokyo: India’s first Olympic Fencer C A Bhavani Devi has posted a picture with world no. 1 tennis player Novak Djokovic. Bhavani Devi, recently won the first match in Fencing for India. Unfortunately, Devi lost her 2nd round match against world no. 3 Manon Brunet. Devi was also praised by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he called her “an inspiration for our citizens.”

Bhavani Devi after her loss, wrote an emotional post and apologised to the nation for not winning her match. She wrote: “It was Excitement & Emotional. I won the First Match 15/3 against Nadia Azizi and become the First INDIAN Fencing Player to win a Match at Olympic but 2nd Match I lost 7/15 against world top 3 player Manon Brunet. I did my level best but couldn’t win. I am sorry”

PM Narendra Modi lauded her and called her “an inspiration” in a tweet:

Novak Djokovic, on the other hand, has entered into the quarter-finals of both men’s singles and mixed doubles events. He defeated Japan’s Nishikori in straight sets – 6-2,6-0. Djokovic has entered his 3rd singles semi-final. 

In the mixed doubles event, Djokovic is partnering with Nina Stojanović of Serbia.

When asked about increasing pressure on him, he said, “Without pressure there is no professional sport. If you are aiming to be at the top of the game you better start learning how to deal with pressure. And how to cope with those moments on the court but also off the court, all the expectations,” to Reuters.
