News India Live, Digital Desk: The havoc of nature has once again been witnessed in the plateau region of Tibet, which is called the ‘Roof of the World’. A powerful earthquake shook the entire area, causing panic among the people. Its intensity on the Richter scale has increased the concern of the administration and scientists. Although the exact loss of life and property is being assessed, this incident has once again raised questions on the security of the Himalayan region.

Horrible scene: Screaming noise at midnight

According to eyewitnesses, when the earthquake occurred, the vibration in the buildings was so strong that people came out of their homes. In the pictures going viral on social media, cracks in the walls of houses and stones falling on the roads can be seen at some places. The local administration has been put on alert mode for relief and rescue operations.

After all, why do so many earthquakes occur in Tibet only?

From a scientific point of view, the region of Tibet falls in the world’s most dangerous ‘Seismic Zone’. There are mainly three big reasons behind this:

Collision of tectonic plates: The Indian Plate is continuously moving north and colliding with the Eurasian Plate. Tibet and the Himalayas are located at the center of this collision, which generates huge amounts of energy and causes earthquakes.

Energy Pressure: The energy stored under the ground due to the plates pressing together comes out through ‘fault lines’, which takes the form of a destructive earthquake.

Rise of Himalayas: The Himalayan Mountains are still moving upwards. This geographical movement makes Tibet extremely sensitive to earthquakes.

Is there a threat to India also?

The impact of major earthquakes in Tibet is often felt as far as Northern India, Nepal and Bhutan. According to scientists, there is always a possibility of a ‘great earthquake’ in the Himalayan belt. This latest movement in Tibet is like a warning for North India including Delhi-NCR.

Disaster Management and Preparedness

The Chinese government has deployed the army and disaster relief teams in the affected areas. Rescue operations are facing challenges due to severe cold in high altitude areas.
