With the festive season approaching, over 1.2 crore central government employees and pensioners are eagerly awaiting the announcement of the next round of Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR), effective retrospectively from July 1, 2026. To avoid prolonged delays, the Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers has submitted a formal representation to the Department of Expenditure under the Ministry of Finance, requesting an expedited decision and administrative clearance.
Confederation Urges Quick Processing Ahead of Festivals
In a communication addressed to the Finance Ministry, the apex employees’ confederation emphasized the need to conclude the formal review and notification process without unnecessary procedural lags. The organization noted that employees face compounding household expenditures during the second half of the year, driven by academic term fees, family travel, and impending festival celebrations. The body clarified that it is not demanding advance disbursements or out-of-turn benefits, but simply that the standard calculation and Union Cabinet approval cycle be fast-tracked so that arrears and updated monthly payslips can be settled smoothly.
What Projections Suggest: Could DA Touch 64%?
Under the 7th Central Pay Commission guidelines, DA and DR rates are revised biannually in January and July, linked directly to the 12-month average of the All-India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW). The current allowance stands at 60 percent, following a 2 percent hike effective January 2026. Industry projections and available retail price indices suggest the July 2026 installment could bring a hike of up to 4 percentage points, taking total DA to 64 percent. However, this figure remains an estimate until the Union Cabinet grants formal ratification.
Estimated Salary and Pension Impact Across Pay Levels
Once cleared by the Cabinet, the revised allowance will apply retrospectively from July 1, 2026, meaning employees and pensioners will receive retroactive arrears covering the intervening months. For an entry-level employee earning a minimum basic salary of ₹18,000, a 4 percent jump translates to an additional ₹720 per month. For personnel with a basic pay of ₹44,900, the hike yields an increase of ₹1,796 monthly, while senior staff at a ₹56,100 basic tier would see an increment of ₹2,244 per month.
