From Lord Ram to King of Ayodhya: Arun Govil’s Regal Look as Dashrath in Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Ramayana’ Unveiled

In a poetic full-circle moment for Indian cinema, veteran actor Arun Govil—who immortalized the role of Lord Ram on Indian television in Ramanand Sagar’s iconic 1987 Doordarshan series—has officially returned to the sacred saga. The makers of Nitesh Tiwari’s magnum opus Ramayana released a striking character poster introducing Govil in the role of King Dashrath, the venerable ruler of Ayodhya and father of Lord Ram. The casting serves as an emotional bridge across generations, transitioning the beloved screen deity into the wise patriarch of the Raghu dynasty.

A Grand Transformation: The King of Ayodhya on His Throne

The solo character poster captures the 68-year-old actor seated majestically upon an intricately carved golden throne. Draped in traditional royal silks, rich brocade dupattas, and layered Vedic jewelry, Govil’s look exudes royal authority, dignity, and fatherly grace. Astute observers noted historical motifs on the golden throne, including the sacred fish emblem connected to the Matsya avatar of Lord Vishnu and the ancient origins of Ayodhya. Unveiling the poster, the filmmakers wrote: “He once brought Ram to life for a generation. Now, he returns to the world of Ramayana as the King of Ayodhya. Arun Govil as King Dashrath”.

A Star-Studded Ensemble Bringing the Epic to Life

Directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari, the cinematic adaptation boasts one of the most high-profile ensembles ever assembled in Indian entertainment. Ranbir Kapoor headlines the film as Lord Ram, while Sai Pallavi portrays Mata Sita. Kannada superstar Yash steps into the formidable role of the demon king Ravana, Sunny Deol embodies Lord Hanuman, and Ravi Dubey portrays Lakshman. Govil’s presence as King Dashrath grounds the sprawling mythological production with emotional resonance, directly connecting modern visual storytelling to the cultural heritage of the 1980s television era.

Massive Production Scale and Two-Part Global Theatrical Release

Mounted as an ambitious two-part cinematic venture, Ramayana is produced by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios in collaboration with Monster Mind Creations and eight-time Oscar-winning visual effects studio DNEG. The production is shot natively for IMAX formats and backed by extensive global distribution. Sony Pictures will handle worldwide distribution outside India, while Dharma Productions distributes the Hindi-speaking theatrical territory. Part 1 is slated for a worldwide release across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam languages, setting the stage for what industry insiders anticipate will be a historic box-office event.
