First case (Scientist 1):
The first scientist received a message containing a link. The link could have been related to a government subsidy or a private information update. As soon as they clicked on a link or downloaded an application, the fraudsters immediately cloned their phone or obtained their data and banking details through malware. Within a few minutes a huge amount was withdrawn from his account.
Second case (Scientist 2):
Almost the same incident happened with another scientist also. Fraudsters use exactly the same method and trap people.
According to experts, the masterplan behind these frauds
The fact that both scientists were duped in the same manner in this case shows that cyber fraudsters are working in a very organized manner and are targeting people with specific profiles (in government or scientific sectors) who are often assumed to understand technology.
- Remote Access and OTP Bypass: Once the link is clicked, the fraudsters gain remote access to the device. After this they can silently bypass OTP or make transactions without the user’s knowledge.
Scientists raised questions, police are investigating
After losing such a huge amount, both the scientists have lodged a complaint in the cyber police station of Lucknow.
Scientists have wondered how fraudsters are able to break security so easily, even though they are always on alert.
