Mary Kom Tokyo Olympics Exit: Indian Boxer Eliminated In Pre Quarter-Finals Of Tokyo 2020

Tokyo: India suffered a big blow at the Olympic Games 2020 on Thursday as Mary Kom, India’s Olympic medal-winning boxer has lost her quarter-final bout to Ingrit Valencia of Columbia who is ranked 8th as per AIBA. 

Mary Kom lost 3-2 in Women Flyweight 48-51kg category. The round of 16 exit means that India’s ace women boxer. The 38-year old boxer had won a bronze deal for India at London Olympics 2012. 

Ingrit Valencia of Columbia had won a medal previously at the Rio Olympics, and thus the match was expected to not be a very easy one for Kom. Mary Kom lost the first round 1-4 but made a strong comeback n Round 2. She battled hard and only lost the match by 3-2 which is a close margin. India’s medal hopes from boxing are very much alive. 

Nonetheless, India’s boxing hopes now rely on Satish Kumar. Kumar progressed into the quarter-finals of the men’s super heavyweight (+95kg) category in the Tokyo Olympics after defeating Ricardo Brown of Jamaica in the Round of 16 here at the Kokugikan arena.

Earlier on Wednesday, Boxer Pooja Rani (75kg) stormed into the quarter-finals of the women’s middleweight (69-75kg) category after defeating Ichrak Chaib of Algeria in the Round of 16 5-0.

On Tuesday, Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) had stormed into the quarter-finals of the women’s welterweight (69-75kg) category in the Tokyo Olympics after defeating Nadine Apetz of Germany in the Round of 16 at the Kokugikan arena.
