Indian Railways travel ticket date Changes: Passengers often complain about the number of trains and availability of seats in Indian Railways. However, along with these problems, another problem that often troubles travelers is the travel date. Passengers will soon get relief from this problem, which has been indicated by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav himself. Indian Railways is implementing a new policy to make it easier for passengers to change their travel dates in case of sudden change in circumstances.

What will be the new rule?

According to media reports, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that from January 2026, passengers will be able to change the travel date of their confirmed tickets online without any extra fee. Currently, if a passenger wants to change his travel date, he has to first cancel his reserved ticket and book a new ticket. The process involves deduction of the refund based on the time of cancellation. This not only increases costs but also causes inconvenience to passengers. Ashwini Vaishnav said, “This system is not in the interest of passengers and needs to be changed.” He also said that instructions to implement this change have already been issued.

Will the seat be guaranteed?

However, the minister clarified that under the new policy, passengers will not be guaranteed a confirmed ticket on the new date as it will depend on the availability of seats in the concerned train. If the fare for the new journey is higher, passengers will have to pay the difference. The move will prove beneficial for millions of passengers who currently face ticket cancellation charges if they change their travel date.

What are the current rules?

As per the existing rules of reservation tickets, a discount of 25% is given if the ticket is canceled 48 to 12 hours before the departure of the train. However, if the ticket is canceled 12 to 4 hours before the train departure, the discount is higher. And after the reservation chart is prepared, if the ticket is canceled later, usually no refund is given.

After the implementation of the new policy, passengers will have to face less financial and mental inconveniences due to sudden changes in travel arrangements. However, no official details have been released yet. The Railway Minister has said that this policy will come into effect in January, so it is possible that some official information in this regard may be released in the coming days and weeks.
