EC Freezes ‘Flowers & Grass’, Allots ‘Football Player’ Symbol to Mamata Banerjee’s Faction

In a major political and electoral development ahead of the October 6 West Bengal Assembly by-elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has frozen the traditional ‘Flowers & Grass’ symbol and the party name ‘All India Trinamool Congress’. The interim order strips both rival camps of the identity associated with the party for nearly three decades. To resolve conflicting nominations on an interim footing, the poll panel has allotted former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s faction the name ‘Mamata All India Trinamool Congress’ alongside the ‘Football Player’ poll symbol, while the rebel faction led by Arup Roy and Ritabrata Banerjee will contest under the banner of ‘Democratic Trinamool Congress’ with the ‘Envelope’ symbol.

Why the Commission Froze the Historic Symbol

The regulatory intervention follows an escalating organisational split where both factions staked legal claim to the original party apparatus, its bank accounts, leadership hierarchy, and electoral insignia. The friction reached a boiling point during the nomination process for the upcoming bypolls in West Bengal’s Nandigram and Rejinagar constituencies, alongside Assam’s Nagaon parliamentary seat. Candidates from both sides filed competing Form-B documents under the TMC banner.

Operating under Paragraph 15 of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968, a three-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar ruled that determining substantive control requires comprehensive hearings that cannot be concluded before polling day. To ensure a level playing field and prevent voter confusion, the Commission temporarily barred both camps from using the parent name and symbol until a final verdict is delivered.

Mamata Slams Order as ‘Political Vendetta’

Reacting sharply to the loss of the iconic floral symbol, Mamata Banerjee termed the decision a “black day” in India’s democratic history and alleged that the freeze was driven by political bias and institutional vendetta to satisfy the ego of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Addressing a press briefing, Banerjee reiterated her lifelong association with the grassroots movement, asserting that her faction would legally challenge the interim ruling while fighting out the by-elections with the new symbol. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also condemned the poll panel’s directive, drawing parallels to previous factional rulings involving the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party.

The Road Ahead for October 6 Bypolls

The immediate challenge for both factions will be voter familiarization within a narrow two-week campaign window. In constituencies like Rejinagar, voters aligned with Mamata Banerjee must identify the ‘Football Player’ crest on the electronic voting machines, whereas supporters of the rebel front will look for the ‘Envelope’ insignia. In Nandigram, the dynamic remains fluid after Mamata Banerjee announced external backing for the Congress candidate, cementing broader alliance coordination against both the rebel front and the BJP. Votes for the bye-elections will be counted on October 9.
