News India Live, Digital Desk: Often whenever there is lack of intelligence, knowledge or good fortune in our life, astrologers advise us to strengthen the ‘Guru’. But do you know how ‘Guru’ himself i.e. Brihaspati Dev achieved this position? This story can inspire anyone because it shows that position and respect are not inherited but through penance.
Who was Brihaspati Dev?
According to mythology, Brihaspati Dev is the son of the great sage Angira. Since childhood, he was very intelligent and of calm nature. He had a wealth of knowledge, but he wanted to do something so that he could truly serve society and religion.
When harsh penance started in ‘Prabhas Kshetra’
It is said that Brihaspati took refuge in Lord Shiva to attain the position of Devguru. He went to ‘Prabhas Kshetra’ (which is near present-day Gujarat) on the sea shore and performed severe penance for years by making a mortal linga of Lord Shiva there. His devotion was so selfless and rigorous that all the gods including Devraj Indra were astounded by his brilliance.
Lord Shiva gave the title of ‘Devguru’
Seeing the unwavering devotion of Jupiter, Lord Shiva was pleased and appeared before him. Seeing his scholarship and penance, Lord Shiva not only made him ‘Guru of the Gods’ (Devguru), but also gave him the most important place as ‘Guru’ among the Navagrahas. Lord Shiva had given him this boon that without his consultation none of the work of the gods would be successful.
Why is the guidance of Jupiter important?
From then till today, Brihaspati Dev is considered to be the priest and chief advisor of the gods. He has an understanding of justice, grammar and politics that no one else has. Whenever the gods find themselves in trouble (be it an attack by demons or any internal dispute), they always turn to Brihaspati Dev.
The biggest lesson of this story for today’s youth is that knowledge never goes waste. If you also remain continuously engaged in your work and choose the right path, then the biggest achievements kiss your feet. So the next time you apply yellow tilak on Thursday, remember the hard work and penance that made a human being (Rishi’s son) the ‘teacher of the gods’.
