News India Live, Digital Desk: Shankaracharya of Jyotish Peeth, Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, who reached the religious city of Kashi, has strongly demanded from the Uttar Pradesh government to declare the cow as ‘state animal’. He said that in a spiritual state like Uttar Pradesh, cow protection should not be just a responsibility but a cultural duty.
1. Why did the demand for making ‘State Animal’ arise?
Shankaracharya made several important arguments in his address:
Cultural importance: In Hindu religion, cow has the status of mother and she is considered the abode of all the gods and goddesses.
Need for conservation: By declaring cow as the state animal, strict laws will be made for their protection and the cows roaming on the streets will be able to get safe shelter.
Identity of Uttar Pradesh: He argued that when other states have given this status to their special animals, then in the land of ‘Ram-Krishna’ the cow should get this respect.

4. Message to the government
Praising Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Shankaracharya said that during his tenure a lot of work has been done for cow shelters, but now the time has come to convert it into a ‘constitutional honour’. He also suggested that if cow is made the state animal, people’s respect for it will further increase and incidents like cow smuggling will be completely stopped.
Will the decision change?
This demand is being viewed very seriously in political circles. Experts believe that in view of the upcoming elections and religious sentiments, the government can take some big steps in this direction. However, making cow the state animal in place of ‘Barasingha’ is an administrative process, which will have to be considered by the Cabinet.
