Shares of packaged consumer goods heavyweight Nestle India witnessed intense selling pressure during afternoon trade on Thursday, tumbling nearly 9% to touch an intraday low of ₹1,259.70 on the BSE and ₹1,260.50 on the NSE. The sudden market correction occurred despite the maker of Maggi, Nescafé, and KitKat reporting double-digit volume expansion and broadly meeting Street expectations for the July–September quarter (Q2 FY27). The stock’s dramatic slip wiped significant market capitalization off Dalal Street before staged bargain hunting helped pare intraday losses later in the trading session.
Robust Topline and Profit Growth Fail to Impress Dalal Street
On the operational front, Nestle India delivered healthy financial performance for the second quarter, posting a 36.3% year-on-year surge in standalone net profit to ₹1,026.70 crore, compared to ₹753 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year. Revenue from operations climbed 20.3% year-on-year to ₹6,788 crore, largely propelled by double-digit domestic volume gains across key packaged food and beverage categories. Operating metrics showed equal strength, with Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation, and Amortisation (EBITDA) rising 30.6% to ₹1,615 crore, expanding operating margins to 23.8%. However, market participants who had built aggressive pre-earnings positions chose to book profits, as headline figures matched expectations rather than delivering an extraordinary earnings surprise.
Rising Food Inflation and Commodity Price Pressures Trigger Caution
The primary catalyst unsettling institutional investors stemmed from management’s cautious commentary regarding severe input cost volatility. Nestle India Chairman and Managing Director Manish Tiwary warned that headline food inflation remains an inescapable operational headwind. Crucial manufacturing raw materials—most notably cocoa and milk prices—have faced supply-chain disruptions and unpredictable weather trends across major agricultural origins. While milk procurement rates are anticipated to cool down as seasonal flush supplies hit wholesale markets, erratic global cocoa prices continue to squeeze operating leverage in the confectionery and chocolate portfolio, elevating market concerns around gross margin sustainability over upcoming quarters.
Rich FMCG Valuations Amplify Profit-Booking Momentum
Market analysts tracking large-cap FMCG counters emphasized that Nestle India had enjoyed a consistent pre-earnings rally, trading at elevated price-to-earnings multiples compared to broader consumer staple benchmarks. When consumer bellwethers operate under rich premium valuations, even slight caution around forward guidance or volume growth moderation triggers swift portfolio reallocations. Despite the steep intraday plunge, domestic brokerages noted that Nestle’s fundamental market leadership, rapid product innovation cycle, and expanding rural reach provide solid medium-term support once near-term commodity inflation headwinds stabilize.
