In a blistering rebuke on the global stage, India delivered a scathing Right of Reply at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), systematically dismantling Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s address. New Delhi declared that Islamabad’s ritualistic habit of peddling fabrications, invoking Jammu and Kashmir, and whitewashing its record on cross-border terrorism will neither rewrite reality nor find buyers in the international community. Exercising India’s response, Petal Gahlot, First Secretary at India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, reminded the world body that repeating lies year after year does not convert them into truth.
“Terrorism, Deceit, and Duplicity”: India Dismantles Islamabad’s Rhetoric
Addressing the assembly in direct response to Sharif’s speech, Gahlot emphasized that the fundamental dispute between the two nations is rooted in Islamabad’s uninterrupted state patronage of cross-border terrorism. Reaffirming New Delhi’s doctrine of strategic deterrence, she warned that any aggression or terrorist adventurism would encounter decisive retaliation.
“At the heart of the issue is the long-standing practice of cross-border terrorism by Pakistan,” Gahlot asserted. “We demonstrated last year that terrorists will have nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. Our right to defend ourselves against terrorism will be exercised and continued. Terrorism by Pakistan will have consequences… We are confident that this Assembly will recognise Pakistan and its policies for what they really are, not what its representative mendaciously projects it to be. Reiterating falsehoods year after year does not make them true. Pakistan’s terrorism, deceit and duplicity will neither benefit it nor the world.”
Rejection of False “Victory” Claims and Trump Mediation Spin
India sharply dismissed Sharif’s attempt to project the May 2025 military confrontation—sparked by the Pahalgam terror attack—as a Pakistani victory, noting that Pakistan’s military was the one desperately pleading for a ceasefire after Indian strikes battered its airbases and command centers.
During Sharif’s speech, Indian diplomat R. Srinivas was seen visibly laughing from India’s seat as the Pakistani premier made inflated claims of triumph. New Delhi also firmly dismissed Sharif’s praise for US President Donald Trump’s alleged “timely intervention,” reiterating its longstanding position that the cessation of hostilities was achieved exclusively through direct communication between the two countries’ Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO), without any third-party mediation.
“Regime of the Army, by the Army, and for the Army”
Taking direct aim at Pakistan’s domestic democratic breakdown, Gahlot called out what she described as hypocritical lectures on human rights from an administration that governs under the thumb of Rawalpindi. Pointing to what Pakistani citizens colloquially refer to as a “Form 47 government,” she highlighted the 27th Constitutional Amendment enacted to shield military commanders with lifelong immunity.
“We heard some hypocritical homilies about democratic rights and human values from a regime whose capital at this very moment is being fortified against its own people,” Gahlot pointed out. “And that is happening because this is a regime of the army, by the army, and for the army. Their puppets may come and go, but let us have no illusion about who calls the shots. The reality of Pakistan is expressed in its 27th Amendment and the lifelong immunity granted to its real ruler.”
9/11 Legacy, Bin Laden Sanctuary, and Religious Persecution
India also highlighted the irony of Pakistan posing as a champion of tolerance barely weeks after the world observed the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Gahlot noted that al-Qaeda mastermind Osama bin Laden was found living in Abbottabad right on the doorstep of Pakistan’s premier military academy—the very institution the civilian government now grovels before.
Calling out Islamabad’s weaponized blasphemy laws and systematic persecution of minorities, India reminded the UNGA that pious platitudes cannot conceal a long, documented record of sectarian hatred and institutional bigotry. Reaffirming that the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir remains an integral and inalienable part of India, New Delhi stressed that the only unfinished agenda in the region is Pakistan’s illegal occupation of Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).
