One way to fulfill this dream is the ‘Green Card Lottery’, also officially known as the Diversity Visa (DV) Program. Through this lottery, the US government gives green cards to about 55,000 people every year.

But if you are an Indian and are thinking of going to America through this lottery, then there is an important news for you. The US government has released the list of Diversity Visa Program for 2026, and once again, India’s name is in the list of countries which cannot apply for it.

But why is India in this list? Is this a new rule?

Hearing this, you might think that this is a new step against India, but it is not at all so. India has been included in this list for many years and there is a special reason behind it.

Actually, the purpose of this lottery is to promote “diversity”. This means that this program gives an opportunity to people from those countries from where very few people have come to America in the last 5 years.

According to American law, if more than 50,000 people from any country have come to America to live permanently in the last 5 years, then people from that country cannot apply for this lottery. Every year a large number of people from India go to America for education, job and other purposes and settle there. This number is much more than 50,000. This is the reason why India is not considered eligible for this lottery.

Apart from India, which other countries are in this list?

India is not alone in this list. Our neighboring countries Pakistan, Bangladesh and China are also involved in this. Apart from these, people from many big countries like Canada, United Kingdom (UK), Mexico, Nigeria and Vietnam also cannot apply for this lottery, because a large number of people from these countries also go to America.

So are all avenues of green card closed for Indians?

no way. Being ineligible for the green card lottery does not mean that Indians cannot immigrate to America. There are many other ways to get a green card, such as:

• Employment-Based Green Card: Through a job in an American company.
• Family-Based Green Card: If any member of your family (e.g. parent, spouse) is a US citizen.
• Investment-Based Green Card: By investing a certain amount in America.

So, if you are dreaming of going to America, then apart from lottery, you can pay attention to these other options.
