Indian benchmark equity indices staged a solid recovery on Wednesday as investor sentiment received a much-needed boost from steadying crude oil prices and positive Asian market cues. Easing concerns over energy inflation, coupled with reports of potential diplomatic progress between the United States and Iran, encouraged aggressive buying across domestic cyclicals. The 30-share BSE Sensex advanced 299.17 points, or 0.40%, to settle at 74,828.25. Simultaneously, the broader NSE Nifty 50 climbed 117.80 points, or 0.50%, to close above key intraday hurdles at 23,446.80.
Metal and Financial Heavyweights Power the Benchmark Rebound
The day’s recovery was spearheaded by sharp buying in metal producers and select financial heavyweights. The Nifty Metal index emerged as the undisputed sectoral star, surging 2.40% on the back of rising global commodity prices, supply concerns, and steady demand trends from top consumer China. Leading steel and aluminium majors Tata Steel and Hindalco Industries rallied over 3% each, featuring prominently among the top gainers. Financial bellwether Bajaj Finance added substantial momentum with a 3.41% surge, supported by encouraging retail credit asset-quality data that reinforced investor confidence in consumption credit.
Oil Price Moderation Lifts Broader Market Risk Appetite
International crude oil prices, which had triggered volatility across import-dependent emerging markets in recent weeks, settled near the psychological $100-per-barrel mark, with Brent crude dipping toward $98.68 during active trade. The moderation in energy benchmarks offered relief to energy-sensitive domestic sectors. Broader markets outperformed the headline indices, with the Nifty Midcap 100 gaining 0.70% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 rising 0.89%. Alongside metals, consumer-focused pockets logged steady gains, with the Nifty FMCG and Realty indices advancing 1.32% and 1.10% respectively.
IT Sector Remains an Outlier Amid Demand Headwinds
Despite the broad-based recovery across financial, industrial, and consumption counters, information technology stocks continued to witness persistent selling pressure. The Nifty IT index ended as the sole major sectoral decliner of the session. Market analysts noted that lingering concerns over enterprise discretionary spending and subdued quarterly earnings outlooks kept institutional investors cautious, preventing tech heavyweights from joining the broader market upswing.
Technical Outlook: Key Nifty Support and Resistance Levels
From a technical chart perspective, market analysts noted that the Nifty is attempting to carve out a short-term base after enduring a six-week corrective phase. The 23,450–23,500 zone now serves as immediate resistance. A decisive daily close above 23,500 is critical to unlocking further upward momentum toward the 23,600–23,700 band. Conversely, failure to sustain above this band could keep the index locked in a consolidation range, with immediate downside support pegged at 23,300 and stronger structural support located near 23,200.
